Snake Away Description: Dr.T's Snake Away snake repellent is the only EPA approved, university tested and patented snake repellent on the market today. When applied as directed, it is safe to humans, pets and the environment. Snake-A-Way is a dry granular mixture which is easy to apply by lightly sprinkling around homes, cabins, trailers, camp sites, and garages. Normal rainfall will not harm the Snake Away. Here's How It Works: The Jacobson's organ in snakes is used with the tongue to sense its environment. The snake flicks out its tongue and picks up the scent of vapor molecules(Napththalene). When the snake pulls in its tongue, the vapor molecules are transferred to the odor-sensitive Jacobson's organ. Naphthalene, a volatile product, and active ingredient vaporizes, it is brought into the sensory receptor (Jacobsons organ) and creates an immediate interference that is repressive enough to close down the sensory system and scare the snake into a hasty retreat. It was found to be so effective that it protected our military during the gulf war from sand vipers and cobras. University of Florida at Gainesville, reported that 83% of all snakes tested (especially rattlesnakes) showed high avoidance to the Snake-A-Way. The only notable exceptions being cottonmouths and rat snakes. Snake Away is a granular material which will last up to three months when sprinkled outside. It has a slight odor which snakes can detect but people and pets don't. It is designed to withstand rain and weather and last up to three months per application. Snake-A-Way Application Directions: Using gloves, apply in bands surrounding the area to be protected. Use bands 4-5 inches wide to repel checkered garter snakes. For rattlesnakes, use bands 8-12 inches wide. In yards, lightly sprinke Snake a Way over areas within the treatment band. When the odor of Snake A way becomes faint, it's effectiveness may be diminished. If this occurs during a season when snakes are active, retreat with enough of the product to restore the original odor intensity. Re-treatment may also be necessary after heavy rains. Excerpts from The University of Florida (EPA Testing & Protocol) Effectiveness test : CONCLUSION AND DISCUSSION: The principal conclusions from this study are as follows. (1) SNAKE-A-WAY repels snakes. (2) The efficacy of the repellent varies with taxon: some species are repelled with remarkable effectiveness, while others are not. However, all species tested, exhibited some degree of behavioral avoidance of the repellent. (3) There are circumstances in which individual snakes of all species tested will cross a strip of repellent, so the product cannot be regarded as an absolute barrier to these reptiles. Such situations are expected to be rare in natural environments, however, and (4) Use of Snake Away can be expected to reduce significantly the occurrence of snakes within areas that are to be protected by recommended use of the product. Typical behavior involved jerking the head away from the repellent after approaching it with the tongue flicks, then crawling away, often rubbing the sides of the head along the ground for a brief period. In one case the body of the snake started writhing after contacting the strip of repellent. These behaviors were common and receptable, and they occured in some individuals as they approached the repellent from distances of 10-15 cm. Four snakes were re-tested two consecutive times, and all repeatedly avoided the repellent. In various ways, it seems likely that a diffuse scattering of SNAKE-A-WAY pellets over the area beyond the strip would have caused the snake to eventually leave the area. Such procedure might also enhance the effectiveness of the product on substrates that are coarse-grained or uneven. While this product might deter other types of snakes as well,it is not expected to consistently repel snakes of the following types: Corn snakes and other rat snakes, "moccasin" snakes such as cotton-mouths and copperheads.
