Sethoxydim Herbicides

Sethoxydim is a post-emergent active ingredient found in selective herbicides. It belongs to the cyclohexanone chemical family. As a selective herbicide, it only effects specific listed plants. These include perennial and annual grasses found in field, ornamental, vegetable, fruit crops. It is known for its crabgrass, bahiagrass, wild oats, and annual ryegrass control. Sethoxydim will not kill sedges or broadleaf weeds.

Sethoxydim Herbicide Products

Sethoxydim is found in Bonide's Over The Top Grass Killer and Basf's, Segment Herbicide. Both contain sethoxydim 13.0%. They are ec (emulsifiable concentrates) and should be used with surfactants or oil adjuvants such as Dyne Amic Surfactant.

Sethoxydim Mode of Action -Lipid Inhibitor

Sethoxydim inhibits the biosynthesis of lipids in grasses, with very little effect on broadleaf herbs and woody plants. It quickly enters grass species through the foliage and travels throughout the plant. Symptoms include the leaf tips getting red or purple and leaf tip necrosis. Growth stops within a couple days; it takes 7-10 days to see the full effect.

Method and Timing of Applications

Sethoxydim Herbicides are applied as a broadcast spray, spot or localized spray applications. Rates vary according to different labels. Management with Sethoxidim is best achieved with early spring applications, and later summer applications for residual control.

Sethoxydim Toxicity

Sethoxydim belongs in the III toxicity class by EPA. Its signal word is "caution", and is slightly toxic. It has moderate toxicity to fish and has low toxicity to birds. To better understand product labels, click here.
