Flea Control

Flea Control Product Treatment In The Home

Step 1:  Cleaning

  • A crucial step to this treatment and any pest control treatment is cleaning.
    • Cleaning surfaces where the pets have been.
    • Remove clutter from area to be treated.
    • Remove pets and birds before treatment.
    • Cover fish tank and turn off pump.

Step 2: Treatment (Insect Growth Regulators and Insecticides)

  • IGR (Insect Growth Regulator) to stop the flea cycle while the insecticides are used to knock down your population. Understanding the flea cycle during flea treatments will aid in your success.
    • If you treat before a flea infestation begins, you can use the IGR by itself. This would prevent the fleas from emerging into adults; stopping the cycle. Spray this every 6 months.
  • Insect Growth Regulators and Insecticides come in liquid form or aerosol forms.
    • Indoors and Flea Aerosols: The best flea aerosols are not total release (aka flea bombs), but insecticide aerosols that may be held and directed to the floor surface, such as Pivot Ultra Aerosol,  Precor 2625, Alpine Flea Aerosol, or Pivot Ultra Aerosol. Flea/IGR Aerosols do not require a sprayer, works on all floor surfaces and are easy to use.
    • Indoors and Liquid Insecticide/IGR Combos: If you want a liquid combination. The recommended insecticides, Fenvastar Eco Cap, FenvaStar Plus are combined with an IGR is a liquid form in your sprayer. (See recommended spraying combinations). Liquid combinations work well on rugs/carpets, but not as well on hard floor surfaces. For hard floor surfaces, choose an aerosol for best results.
  • Treat the pets with flea treatments

Recommended Flea Control Products - Inside Use

(For Carpets & Rugs)

Pick from column A and column B
Mix together in a pump sprayer and spray floor surfaces. You may spray upholstery if water doesn't stain the fabric.
Use recommended ounces per gallon of water per 1,000 sq ft

A (Insecticides) B (IGRs) Use 1 oz
  • FenvaStar EcoCap (*Top Recommendation)
  • FenvaStar Plus
  • Martin's IGR
  • Tekko Pro IGR

Example: FenvaStar Eco Cap (2.0 oz) mixed with Tekko Pro IGR or Martin's IGR or Precor IGR (1 oz) in one gallon of water.

  1. Spray carpets, rugs, underneath furniture cushions, under beds and areas where the pets have gone.
  2. You will typically need to retreat the insecticide again (alone without the IGR) in 1-2 weeks. This is necessary to treat the fleas emerging from the cocoon stages. It takes 4-6 weeks for the IGR to break the cycle completely.
  3. You will not need to re-spray the IGR for 6 months (unless the rugs and carpets are cleaned)
