Cricket Control

Crickets are considered occasional invaders. There are various types of crickets that can be pests such as the House cricket, Field cricket, Camel (camel back) cricket, Mole Cricket and more. Crickets are closely related to cockroaches, as both have a gradual metamorphosis. The younger crickets, called nymphs, look like the adults, but the wings are not fully developed.

Mole Crickets

The Southern mole cricket damages turf by tunneling through it in search of food. Mole crickets can feed a little below the soil surface on roots or at the soil surface in turf areas. Mole crickets mate in spring and early summer. The females lay eggs in the soil afterwards. If is best to apply insecticides in mid-June- July. At this time, the mole cricket eggs have hatched , and the nymphs(mole crickets that are immature) are not yet large enough for much turf damage.

Field Crickets

field cricket Field crickets are found in many places in the United States. This cricket is slightly larger than the House Cricket and is dark brown to black or grey. Field crickets feed on plants and live outside, but they will invade homes if food sources become scarce or there are extreme temperatures. Because Field crickets are attracted to lights, turn off lights to reduce the population when they are numerous. Seal as many openings at ground level as possible as a seclusion technique.

Treatment Solution :
Use a residual insecticide such as LambdaStar UltraCap 9.7, D-Fense SC or Cyper WSP, sprayed around entry points such as doors and windows and around the foundation. Insecticide baits such as Intice Perimeter or Niban can be scattered around the foundation outdoors.

House Crickets

house cricketsAlthough House crickets live outside, they may enter your home in large numbers. The adults are identified by three dark bands on the head, light yellow-brown and 3/4-1 inch long. House crickets may damage or chew on silks and woolens. They also eat paper, fruits and vegetables. These crickets prefer the warmer locations such as fireplaces, kitchens and basements.

Treatment Solution :
Use a residual insecticide such as Lambda Star UltraCap 9.7or Cyper WP, sprayed around entry points such as doors and windows and around the foundation. Insecticide baits such as Intice, Niban or Lava lur can be scattered around the foundation outdoors.

Camel Crickets

camel back cricketsAlso known as humpback crickets, these crickets have a back that looks like a hump back. Camel crickets are about 1/2-1 1/2 inche long with a light to dark brown coloration. Camel Crickets are commonly located in basements and crawl spaces. They also may be found under moist areas found under logs or stones.

Treatment Solution :
Camel cricket treatments need attention to crawl spaces and basements. Use a residual insecticide such as D-Fense SC or Cyper WP sprayed along the edges and crawl space walls.Using baits like Intice Perimeter or  Niban can be scattered in these areas and do very well in controlling the population there.

Mole Crickets

mole cricketsMole crickets are not seen often because they stay underground most of the time. They are 1-1.25 inches long , winged and well rounded.

The mole cricket nymphs look like the adults, but do not have wings. During the fall and spring months the mole crickets mate and their exit holes appear. The mole cricket nymphs cause tremendous damage to turf and grass during the warmer summer months.

Treatment Solution (Timing is Critical):
The best control for mole crickets is waiting for the nymph stage and killing the nymphs. Adult mole crickets are more difficult if not impossible to kill. Treat the nymph stages before they get big enough to cause damage .
Treat with Imidacloprid Granules by the end of May (lasts 3-6 months) or Bifen XTS around mid June-July (lasts 30 days).
