Characteristics

 

  • Plantago lanceolata
  • perennial weed
  • basal rosette (leaves are grouped from a central point in a circular shape)
  • low growing with flower stems that extend upwards
  • flowers are bunched at end of them (broadleaf plantain’s have flowers that extend along the flower stem)
  • flowers during the summer months

  • spot treat in trouble areas
  • only treat the target weed and avoid wanted vegetation
  • best time to apply is in the spring and fall

Prevention

    • pre-emergent herbicides are not as effective because it is a perennial 
    • the best time to apply these herbicides is during the fall months
    • multiple applications are necessary
    • look for active ingredients that pre-emergent that also has post-emergent qualities (dithiopyr and indaziflam)
