Hydrophonics and Plant Nutrients

Hydroponics is a method of growing plants using water instead of soil as a medium for the plant to absorb nutrients. Nutrient supplements are an important part of hydroponic gardening since there is no soil to supply the nutrients. Soil-based gardening also needs supplements for optimum plant growth, since soils do not always have all the minerals required by the plant.

Plant Nutrients

Plant nutrients combine the three categories of primary nutrients, secondary nutrients, and micronutrients.

  • Primary plant nutrients are nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and potassium (K). These primary nutrients are essential and are needed by plants in higher quantities than the other categories.
  • Secondary plant nutrients are calcium (Ca), magnesium (Mg), and sulphur (S). These nutrients are needed for good plant health, but they are not needed in such high quantities.
  • Micronutrients-These plant nutrients are boron (B), chlorine (Cl), copper (Cu), iron (Fe), manganese (Mn), molybdenum (Mo), and zinc (Zn). Micronutrients are needed in the plant growth and plant biology and are needed in small quantities.

In addition to plant nutrients, we also carry a silicon product , Monterey Soluble Silicate, that provides resistance to environmental stresses.
