Termites At A Glance Chart

Subterranean Termites

Evidence of Activity:

  • Protective mud tubes ascending from the ground to the structure or protruding from walls.
  • Termite swarming within the structure
  • Slits in the wood (flight slits)
  • Uncharacteristic waviness in the wood

Prevention:

    1. Treat the soil with a termiticide. Use a non repellant like Taurus SC. For more information, go to Traditional Soil Treatments.
    2. A Termite Bait System, like Advance Termite Bait Systems. For more information, Overview of Termites and Baits.
    3. Regular inspections by a pest control company or do it yourself, if qualified.
    4. Eliminate Conducive Conditions:
      • Earthwood contact is where wooden portions of a structure touch soil or are embedded in concrete / flooring allowing undetectable termite access.
      • Excessive moisture within 3' of a structure provides water for termites and breaks down any termiticide treatment.
      •  Foliage( trees, shrubs, etc. ) within 3' of a structure reduces visual access, provides food source and may breach any termitcide barrier via the root system.
      • Blind joints are areas where two concrete slabs meet and are blocked from visual access by wood or other material. This condition allows undetectable termite entry.
      •  Hollow tile walls allow undetectable termite access via void chambers.
      • Stucco siding embedded in the soil or concrete allows undetectable termite access.
      • Concrete cracks in excess of 1/16" allow undetectable termite entry..
      • Wood debris or other cellulose containing material should not abut the structure

Control:

When activity is present,

Drywood Termites

Evidence of Activity:

Their fecal material looks "sand like". Kick-out holes on the walls, ceilings or wood. Infestation may take two years before evidence of droppings is present.

Prevention:

  • Use treated lumber during construction.
  • Coat any untreated wood or exposed wood with Boracare or Timbor.
  • Seal all cracks and crevives with caulking.

Control:

For complete treatment, use tent fumigation from a professional termite company.
